Advanced Surface Ablation

What is Advanced Surface Ablation?

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), also known as PRK or LASEK, is a laser vision correction procedure to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. In the ASA laser vision correction procedure, Dr. Christopher Larson, and Dr. Todd Larson utilize the VISX Star 4 excimer laser to reshape the curvature of the cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. ASA differs from LASIK in that no flap is created during the procedure. Potential candidates for ASA may be individuals with larger pupils, thin corneas, or other corneal issues that exclude them from candidacy for LASIK.

The Advanced Surface Ablation Procedure

For the ASA laser vision correction procedure, no scalpels are used and no incisions are made. Dr. Christopher Larson, and Dr. Todd Larson first removes the protective surface layer called the epithelium from the cornea. After smoothing the area, treatment with the excimer laser to reshape your cornea is applied directly to the corneal surface. Immediately following your procedure, a clear bandage contact lens is placed on the cornea to protect it. The epithelium naturally regenerates within three to five days. Once the epithelium is healed, usually on the second or third post-operative day, Dr. Christopher Larson, and Dr. Todd Larson will remove the bandage contact lens.

Dr. Christopher Larson, and Dr. Todd Larson will determine which procedure - LASIK or ASA - is best for you based on your test results during your complimentary consultation.

Visit Our Cataract Center

Cataract patients now have the option to have their vision corrected to allow them to see at both near and far distances after cataract surgery! These lens implants provide significantly reduced dependence on glasses for all tasks of daily living, providing a range of focus that laser vision correction cannot achieve. Individuals with visual impairment suffering from cataracts previously had only a mono-focal lens implant option after surgery.
